A lovely, well-balanced drop spindle made with a resin whorl and a cherry wood shaft. The whorl includes a sprinkling of real wild spring woodland flowers, and includes a cluster of real Sulphur Tuft fungi (Hypholoma fasciculare). The shaft of this spindle is made from Wild Cherry wood from a storm-felled tree that grew on our farm. The shaft was shaped as one with the whorl, resulting in superior balance. The whorl was created on the lathe from one of my own custom-made resin blanks, not pre-formed in a mould, so each and every one of our spindles has its own distinct shape, character and finish. I haven't cut away the underside of the whorl very far, as I didn't want to cut into the little fungi caps - so the whorl is relatively flat underneath, not cupped as most of my spindles are.
The shaft is approximately 23cm long - the total weight of the spindle is 37g, making it ideal for spinning light to medium weight yarns. The dome-shaped whorl is notched to the back of the hook. The strong hand-forged steel hook is in a swan-neck style, which balances the yarn properly above the centre of the spindle. Has been test spun to ensure it has good balance.
This spindle is supplied with a robust custom-made shipping container, which also acts as a handy carrying case for later.
The resin used for the whorl contains a UV protectant, natural items set in resin will inevitably fade and/or discolour over time. Some think this adds a pretty 'vintage' look to the design. To delay the onset of fading, we recommend that you store your spindle away from direct sunlight.
We will add a little wool top as packing with your spindle, so you can get started spinning on it as soon as it arrives.
Whorl diameter is approx 6.0cm.
Shaft length is approx 22cm.
