A lovely, well-balanced drop spindle made with a resin whorl and a beech wood shaft. The whorl includes a sprinkling of real dried mushrooms (Sulphur Tuft fungi) and lichen (oak moss). The hand-turned shaft of this spindle was shaped as one with the whorl, resulting in superior balance. The whorl was created on the lathe from one of my own custom-made resin blanks, not pre-formed in a mould, so each and every one of our spindles has its own distinct shape, character and finish.
The shaft is approximately 23cm long - the total weight of the spindle is 33g, making it ideal for spinning light to medium weight yarns. The dome-shaped whorl is notched to the back of the hook. The strong hand-forged steel hook is in a swan-neck style, which balances the yarn properly above the centre of the spindle. Has been test spun to ensure it has good balance.
Please note, I’ve never used this kind of mushroom in resin before, so I can’t be certain that it won’t change colour or stain the resin over the next few months. Sulphur tuft is a bright yellow colour in its natural undried state, so there’s a possibility it will modify the colour of the resin if its pigment migrates through the cured resin. I made the whorl a few months ago, it hasn’t altered since, but fungi can be strange, so do please be aware of this when you purchase.
This spindle is supplied with a robust custom-made shipping container, which also acts as a handy carrying case for later.
The resin used for the whorl contains a UV protectant, natural items set in resin will inevitably fade and/or discolour over time. Some think this adds a pretty 'vintage' look to the design. To delay the onset of fading, we recommend that you store your spindle away from direct sunlight.
We will add a little wool top as packing with your spindle, so you can get started spinning on it as soon as it arrives.
